 Summertime!!

Summer this year looks like a mission trip to Japan, preparation for school, and work.  I started working at a dentist office a couple months back.  At the office, they have this huge archive of records for patients.  At the ends of each patient's file, we put a little colored sticker that marks what year they came in last.  It pretty much looks like a rainbow.  When pulling the charts though, it always feels like I pull some of the same ones over and over even though there's hundreds to choose from.  I went home later that night, and had a discussion with my dad.  I was telling him about the class of kids that I tutor, and how most of them are okay, but a few of them are fatty bratties.  He then presented me with:

The Pareto Principle:  This is a phenomenon that states that 80% of the consequenses result from 20% of the causes.  It started when he noticed that 80% of the fruit in his orchard came from 20% of the trees.

At the dentist office, 20% of the patients come in 80% of the time.  Maybe they have weak teeth, poor eating habits, or a lot of free time.  Either way,  there are some patients I've seen about 10 times, and still tons that I've never seen.  If I were to give an estimate, I'd say maybe 81.263% that I've yet to see.

At the place I tutor, 20% of the kids in my class give me 80% of my headaches.  My dad (who is quite the skilled manager) said that you don't need to focus on the whole class to make them pay attention.  You just need to put all your energy into the 20% of the class that's bad.

I started looking for other things to apply this principle to.

car stereos

When you're driving in your car listening to music, you're all about equal opportunity.  Therefore, all 6 little buttons for radio stations get pressed with the same frequency.  Yes??  No!  I know for me, 20% of the stations on my radio, I listen to 80% of the time.

                                          closet

When you're picking out an outfit, you cycle your clothes so that you wear everything in your closet the same exact amount.  Yes??  No!  Think of the article of clothing that touches the wall to the far right of your closet, then pair it with the article of clothing that touches the far left of your closet.  Now wear that.  Yea... not so much right?  20% of the clothes in your closet, you wear 80% of the time.  For the person who owns this wardrobe, it's purple on purple every single day.

                                                                                             traffic light

When your driving down the street, you stop at the same amount of stop lights for the same amount of time.  Yes??  No!  I know on my street, it's the same 20% that stop me 80% of the time.

And homework, just because most of us are done for the year.  The same amount of classes give you the same amount of homework every time.  Yes??  Definitely not!  20% of your classes give you 80% of your homework.  If you have five classes, that 20%=math.

Happy Summer!

It's been a long time... and a lot has happened since February.  I'm in the process of hearing back from schools. Some that I applied to:

250px-Triton  529292254 250px-Waves

And I am going to the motherland this August.  I never really pictured myself in Japan... that used to be my secret weapon for deprived child.  When everyone else had three fingers up and I had one... I brought out the "I have never been to Japan" and sealed the deal with the "I have never seen any Star Wars movies".  Looking past all of this though... I have felt a calling to Japan after we had some missionaries from Japan stay at our house back in February.  Therefore... I am going to Chino in August where there are 32 Christians in a city of over 50,000.  I also get to go with the padre:

My dad is probably the funniest person I know... really witty and sharp.  He has diabetes... and a couple of weeks ago I was trying to give him a shot with this thing:

                                                           BD Lancet Device

I pressed the button and he just gave me this blank look.  Then I felt this pain in my finger... and I realized I shot myself.  Haha

Summer break... you are so close... and so far.

Venting on Lenting

It's that time of year.  Lent.  For the past couple of years that our church has been practicing lent, I had always given up T.V.  This was always the obvious choice since my family had constantly bugged me about watching too much T.V.... "T.V. Princess" was the title if I recall correctly.  Whenever Friday afternoon rolled around... after a long, hard day of high school... I would sit down to unwind with some good ol Disney channel or MTV.  As soon as I turned off the T.V., the phrase, "T.V. Princess" would be ringing in my ears.  Lent... lent was the sole exception... a time when I could say, "Not this time my friends".  As I have grown, and as the season's meaning has grown in my own life... I have begun to examine this time of year with a deeper consideration.  It is a time to tune out the noise that is so loud in our lives, and create space for the living God.  A lot of T.V. finalies usually run during this time... and I remember trying to watch them in 1 or 2 minute intervals thinking that I wasn't technically "watching" it if I wasn't sitting down.  Instead of trying to cheat Lent this year... I think I will try to fully embrace its meaning.  I know what I'm giving up this year, and all I can say is that it's going to be.... quiet.

Today is my one year xanga B-day... it's something I never thought I'd get into.  I love it :)  I think because I do, I should give it up until Easter.  I encourage you to participate in lent.  If your heart is in the right place... you will definitely be blessed.  Alrite... see you then :)

ERIN

When I was a kid, I always used to look for my name in those catalogs that my mom used to get in the mail.  Whether it was Pottery Barn kids, Mrs. Anderson's, or my 3rd grade English workbook, I never saw my name used as an example.  It seems of late, however, people are finally starting to understand the greatness of this name... haha.

Hello 2007

First xanga entry of the new year!  It was nice to take a break from all the apps and hang out with the fam for Christmas and New Year's.  New Year's consisted of playing DS with my 11-year-old cousins.  Are you ever supposed to hold back when you compete against the little ones?  If so, what's the cut off age?  Is it too much when there's tears in their eyes?  I've always struggled with this b/c I am unfortuately an extremely competitive person.  Maybe b/c if you do let them win, they rub it in your face and make you feel like a loser.  Not that this has ever happened to me.

                                   http://www.lapostcard.com/Contact.html             ->          http://tags.worldcupblog.org/Mexico/3/

I also had the opportunity to go to Mexicali last week with Wintersburg and Evergreen.  I definitely saw how blessed I am through this experience.  It's amazing to see fellow Christians worshiping God and giving so much of themselves despite the fact that they don't have the most materialistically speaking.  This was definitely one of the most memorable and worthwhile winterbreaks ever.
